Dr. Lieber devoted much of his career to advancing the understanding of the pathogenesis of alcohol liver disease and, consequently potential therapies to treat this chronic condition. Lieber was born in Antwerp, Belgium, on Feb. 13, 1931. He earned his medical degree in 1955 at the University of Brussels “He was a giant in his field, probably the most eminent in the world in alcohol and the liver,” said Dr. Steven Schenker, another expert, at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He was 78 and lived in Englewood Cliffs, N.J when he passed away after battling stomach cancer.
